After Birth
During Birth
The non-clinical support a labor doula provides has been shown to improve outcomes for the birthing person in the short and long term. (A postpartum doula supports the family in the 4th trimester – the first 12 weeks after birth.)
“I wanted to make sure my husband felt comfortable in supporting me throughout labor. Laura met with us and showed him counterpressure and massage techniques. Her suggestions were great not only during labor, but also in the final weeks of my pregnancy.
At the hospital, my husband felt very confident in helping me through the long labor. He was very supportive, and the nurses commented that it was like there was a doula in the room.”
"Laura arrived when we needed her most. She provided a great variety of suggestions to bring our morale back up (we were tired) and really listened to our needs to find what helped most. She is incredibly dedicated, calm and compassionate."
"I am so grateful for our talks and for you coming to our house to work with us."
"Laura was great. She helped me in all different ways to have a safe delivery."
Be on call for the pregnant person leading up to the estimated due date and talk with the pregnant person when labor begins (when you call your doula).
Provide labor encouragement and comfort measures at your place of birth: movement, positions, counterpressure, massage, water therapy, heat/cold, breathing, emotional support, meditation, focus, whatever helps you.
Help you settle in after the birth; assist with the first breastfeeding when feasible.
Help you prepare for and feel confident about this life-changing event intellectually, physically, logistically and emotionally, including referring you to specialists and experts if you desire.
Encourage childbirth education and provide learning resources for you and your partner or support person. The birthing person’s partner is empowered, not disregarded or replaced, by the doula.
Help you and your partner understand and evaluate birth interventions, consider options, and identify preferences prior to going into labor.
